'Thamma' and 'Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat' Box-Office: Biggest Opener for Ayushmann Khurrana; Harshvardhan Rane Film Springs a Surprise
Co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, 'Thamma' had a more dominant screen share as compared to 'Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat'.
The two Hindi releases this Diwali featured a face-off between vampires and lovers nursing broken hearts. The mighty theatrical outing was Thamma, the latest film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, headlined by Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna.
The film, distributed by PVR Inox, had a more dominant screen share as compared to Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, featuring Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa. Thamma opened to a solid ₹25 crore, reaping the benefits of the Diwali holidays.
The horror-comedy emerged as the third-highest opener for Maddock Films, after their 2024 blockbuster Stree2 and this year's historical epic Chhaava, led by Vicky Kaushal. It has also become the biggest opener for Khurrana, whose previous best was Dream Girl 2, which opened at ₹10 crore in 2023.
Within the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, Thamma is the second-highest opener after Stree 2, which minted a little over ₹55 crore last year. The film will now aim to enjoy a free run at the box-office, especially this week, as it opened on a Tuesday and would have a good run till Sunday owing to the holidays.
Thamma is expected to have an extended opening weekend of over ₹100 crore. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Paresh Rawal.
Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, meanwhile, held its own against a bigger release and opened to a double-digit figure on Tuesday. Directed by Milap Zaveri, the romantic drama registered an opening day of ₹10 crore, a good number for the film considering lesser showcasing.
The film seems to have benefited greatly from its music and the re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam, which brought the spotlight on Rane. According to trade, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat is doing a bulk of its business in tier-2 and tier-3 centres. Like Thamma, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat will also aim to have a good run owing to the holidays till Sunday.
