At the press meet of Bad Girl in Chennai, which took place on Monday (September 1), the film’s producer and acclaimed director Vetrimaaran said in his speech that this would be his last film as producer under the Grass Root Film Company banner. He spoke at length about the pressures he faced as he tried to release both his films, Bad Girl and Manushi. He also discussed the distinction between directing and producing. With production, he said that he needed to worry about the comments being posted about any promotional material, while directing remained a purely creative endeavour.

The teaser of Bad Girl had created a lot of controversy upon release, and his other film Manushi too has been fighting a legal battle after the CBFC advised as many as 37 cuts of the film.

Last Friday, the Madras HC Judge who watched Vetrimaaran’s Manushi described it as a “film that masterfully explores the dark underbelly of power.” The judge also issued a directive to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC ) for it to release the film’s Censor Certificate, after the film’s producer made “certain modifications and removals,” a report in The Hindu reported. The film is being directed by Gopi Nainar, who had earlier made Aramm, back in 2017.

“Manushi is a poignant cinematic reflection on how ordinary lives can be torn apart when systemic prejudices and State machinery collide in moments of political suspicion. At its heart, the film narrates the story of a humble father and his young daughter, who find themselves ensnared in a police dragnet merely because they leased part of their modest property to three women — later branded as extremists,” the judge wrote.

The film’s trailer, released in April 2024 by actor Vijay Sethupathi, indicated a hard-hitting narrative around custodial torture faced by a woman suspected of being a terrorist. In September 2024, however, both the CBFC’s examining and screening committees refused certification, stating the film portrayed the State in a poor light and blurred the line between “leftist communism” and “mainstream communism.”
