The filmmaker opens up about his Simbu-led project set in the 'Vada Chennai' world, and his plans for 'Vada Chennai 2'.
Tamil director Vetrimaaran is returning to the world of Vada Chennai in his next, an untitled project starring Silambarasan TR, popularly known as Simbu. In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the filmmaker opened up about the roots of this intriguing follow-up.
“To start talking about Vada Chennai, it’s a very long story,” he said. The idea goes back to 2003, when a friend’s lost bike led him into Chennai’s underworld. “Slowly he got to know the mafia, and I wanted to know more. I started meeting people and talking to them.” One of those encounters, he recalls, was transformative: “The person I spoke told me he had lived a world I had never seen in films. He started writing it down for me. He himself could have been a scriptwriter if life had been different.” That material became the seed for Vada Chennai.
“Whatever I took out and left out of that original script ended up being the world of Selvam in my first film (Polladhavan),” Vetrimaaran explained. The first attempt at Vada Chennai was meant to star Simbu, before eventually evolving into the Dhanush-led version audiences know today.
Now, the filmmaker is returning to that early writing. “We have set it in the same timelines, but at a different place,” he said. “Most of the characters would weave into this story and then go out. This story on its own is a film, but those characters come and add more drama.” One major absence will be Dhanush’s Anbu. “Of course, Dhanush’s character is not going to be a part of this film,” he confirmed.
That hasn’t stopped fans from asking about Vada Chennai 2. “That is supposed to happen as soon as I finish this film. But we don’t know when that is going to happen,” Vetrimaaran said. The sequel has been in the offing since the first film’s release, but circumstances have delayed it.
“Immediately after Vada Chennai, we were supposed to do Vada Chennai 2,” he recalled. “But the producer, S. Thanu Sir, did not want to have Vada Chennai 2. He wanted a new story. Because Vada Chennai IP is with Dhanush. Dhanush is the producer of Vada Chennai. So he wanted his own IP, so we ended up making Asuran.”
For now, Vetrimaaran’s gaze is firmly set on Simbu’s entry into the world he first imagined more than 20 years ago.
