The actor opens up about working with Riteish as a director, reconnecting with Sanjay Dutt, and why this film felt special
In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Vidya Balan, who was last seen in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024) opened up about her upcoming historical drama based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Known for choosing scripts that resonate with her, Balan seems especially excited about this one. The film is being directed by Riteish Deshmukh, who returns to the director’s chair after his successful Marathi debut Ved.
"Yes, I just finished shooting for it," she said. “It’s a film on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and I was amazed, I had worked with Riteish as an actor in Heyy Babyy (2007), and his comic timing is amazing. But he’s also a very good director.”
Deshmukh surprised Balan with his fluid, actor-friendly directing style. “It helps that he’s also an actor because the way he directed me was almost seamless, it felt like a conversation between two actors. I really enjoyed that,” she shared. “And I think what they’re attempting to do with this one is really fantastic. I’m very happy to be a part of it.”
The film also marks a long-awaited reunion with Sanjay Dutt, nearly two decades after their beloved Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), a film that remains iconic to this day. “It was so beautiful to be back on the set with him after 19 years,” Balan said with a smile. “I cannot tell you how kind he was to me during Parineeta (2005). Of course, we’d been in touch sporadically over the years, but I was just so happy to be able to hug him and tell him, ‘Lage raho Munna Bhai! Aap jaisa koi nahi.’”
With a powerful subject at its core and strong personal connections woven through the experience, this film seems to hold both professional and emotional meaning for Balan. It’s not just another role, it's a reunion, a reflection, and a return to roots.
