The conversation around working hours in the film industry has gained momentum recently, especially after reports emerged that Deepika Padukone stepped away from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit due to a request for an eight-hour shift not aligning with the film’s schedule. The incident has sparked wider discussions about flexible working hours in Bollywood, particularly for women navigating motherhood.

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Vidya Balan added her voice to the conversation, advocating for a more inclusive and compassionate work environment for women navigating early motherhood.

“There is conversation about how mothers need to have an option to work for fewer hours, flexible hours, right? And I think that’s fair,” she said. “Every industry is adopting those practices so that we don’t lose out on new mothers, or women in the early years of them having children, so I think it’s very important that we do have flexible working hours for women.” she added.

Her statement reflects the growing awareness that the film industry, known for its long and demanding hours, needs to evolve with the times, especially as more women step into lead roles both on and off screen.

When asked about her working hours and shifts, Balan was very candid and honest about the realities of her own schedule. “With the kind of films that I do, we cannot afford to shoot only for eight hours,” she said. “And I am not a mother, so I have all the time in the world to be doing a 12-hour shift.”

Her response offers an empathetic take, acknowledging that while her personal situation allows for longer working hours, not everyone is in the same boat, bringing a balanced perspective to the debate. For an industry that’s constantly evolving, voices like Vidya’s add weight to the growing call for change. As more actors open up about the need for flexibility, perhaps the industry is finally inching toward more humane and balanced working conditions, where being a parent and a performer don’t have to be at odds.
