The 'Liger' actor reflects on his complex relationship with 'Arjun Reddy,' the film that made him a star and why he’s finally made peace with its lasting impact.
Vijay Deverakonda has long had a complicated relationship with Arjun Reddy, the 2017 Telugu film that launched him into national prominence. Though it became a cult sensation and defined a generation of Indian anti-heroes, the actor has often spoken about his desire to move beyond it. Now, he says he has finally stopped trying to outpace its shadow.
“Just yesterday I was at Namit Malhotra’s house and some of his friends had come specifically to come to see me because they love Arjun Reddy,” Deverakonda shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India. “It’s a good thing. I used to fight it for a long time because I used to feel that I needed to do something better that beats it.”
That pressure, he admits, has gradually lifted.
“Recently I have come to terms with the fact that it’s a film that will always be loved,” he said. “And maybe the goal or objective or point is not to do work that makes people forget that.”
The actor drew a comparison with Leonardo DiCaprio, saying, “I will always remember Leonardo DiCaprio for Titanic. That does not mean he cannot or will not do other good work. But you will always be attached to a film and an actor.”
For Deverakonda, it’s now about building a broader legacy. “People can have that relationship with me and Arjun Reddy and have a fondness for that film. I have left that battle [of wanting people to forget it] aside,” he said. “It’s about making good films. It’s not about making them forget Arjun Reddy, but about giving them other memorable films that they also enjoy and love and will add on to the list.”
Deverakonda will next be seen in Kingdom directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri which is scheduled for a pan-India release on 31st July.
