Neeraj Pandey is clinical when he talks about his craft. With his characteristic wit, he jokes that success has afforded him two luxuries: Shorter meetings over phone calls and freedom to execute his projects exactly as envisioned. The filmmaker, behind acclaimed movies like A Wednesday and Special 26 and huge streaming successes like the Special Ops and Khakee franchises, says if his titles look massive, it is because he is spending money where it matters: on the screen.

"We don't splurge on casting or any other nonsense," Pandey says as he talks about his latest Special OPS 2, which stars Kay Kay Menon, Vinay Pathak, and Karan Tacker among others. "It is money spent on production and that's the reason it looks like this," the filmmaker says. Also starring Prakash Raj, Tahir Raj Bhasin, and Saiyami Kher, Special Ops 2 will stream on JioHotstar from July 11.

The new season has anchored itself around the "dangers" of Artificial Intelligence, a theme that has popped up in several action-thrillers across the world, including Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

"You mentioned Mission: Impossible, so let me tell you that this show was ready 8 months ago, even though it's just coming out now. It goes on to show that these are the hot topics that excite storytellers across the world. After the love we got for seasons 1 and 1.5, we wanted to bring a bigger experience, storytelling, and a newer world. The idea was to do it, whatever it takes. The philosophy was embedded right from the writing stage," Pandey says, who has written the series along with Benazir Ali Fid and Deepak Kingrani.

Special Ops premiered in 2020 to acclaim, which led to the follow-up Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story. The show features Menon in the titular role of a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer. The "spies" in Pandey's world are more rooted than flamboyant, unlike the way Bollywood has usually mined them for the big screen blockbusters.

For Pandey, the way he has mounted his shows is flamboyant. "This is how I define flamboyance. It is understated, not in your face. Subtle can be strong; subtle is fantastic." As his latest series drops on Friday, Pandey hopes that his spy universe goes "onwards and upwards" from this point, with the team working on several instalments.

What are the chances, though, of a future instalment coming straight to the big screen? Pathak, who was also present during the interview, laughs and says, "God willing!" Pandey looks at him smiling, and adds, "Just as he said, what else can I say!"
