Three years after Vijay Deverakonda announced that he added 'The' to his name, the actor has now revealed why he has also dropped the honorific, noting that it led to a "crazy amount of backlash" which wouldn't have happened to any other star.

Ahead of his pan-India release, Kingdom, the actor spoke about the uproar his "title" had received from a section. "That was one whole situation," the actor reflects on how the honorific led to a meltdown.

"There was a crazy amount of backlash because I added 'The' to my name. You know what's interesting? No other name or no other person would have gotten this backlash. You can have any name, from Universal Star to anything, people younger and older than me, everybody had a tagline, I was the only one to not have it. But nobody gets backlash," Deverakonda says in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India.

It was during the release of Liger (2022) that Deverakonda's team asked him to come up with his own honorific, as is a tradition in South Indian cinema. "But I was resisting for a while because I didn't want a tag," he says. What made him give in was the media, which coined terms for him, including dubbing him as "Southern Sensation" or" Rowdy Boy, Rowdy Star".

"I am not 'Southern Sensation'! I am of the entire India, so I felt everything was limiting. I just wanted to be known by my name, so I thought if you do need a tag, 'The' is enough. So that was added. But people were like, 'How can you put 'The'? Who does that!?' But the whole point of 'The' was that I do not want a tag, and even if that is a problem, I do not want it! If you do not want it, chop the thing off!" the actor says. "Vijay Deverakonda is enough, we don't need anything more or less."

The actor will be next seen in Kingdom, set to release soon. The spy thriller unites him with filmmaker Gowtam Tinnanuri, known for helming the Telugu and Hindi versions of Jersey.
