Netflix will release a filmed version of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the Broadway and West End stage prequel to its flagship series. The news was first reported by Collider, which revealed that the production will be professionally recorded for a future streaming debut. A release date has not yet been announced.

To accommodate filming, a week of performances — from 10 to 14 February — has been cancelled. The recording will feature the Tony Award-winning Broadway production’s original cast, including Louis McCartney, T.R. Knight, Gabrielle Nevaeh and Alex Breaux.

The First Shadow explores the backstory of Henry Creel Jr., the troubled teenager who later becomes Vecna, the central antagonist in the Netflix series. Set in Hawkins, Indiana, the play follows Henry as his psychokinetic abilities begin to emerge. As his powers intensify, he falls under the influence of a mysterious force linked to another dimension. The story also features younger versions of Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado as they begin to investigate unusual events in the town, while Dr Martin Brenner takes an interest in Henry’s abilities.

The production links Henry’s origins to his father’s naval service aboard the USS Eldridge, referencing the alleged “Philadelphia Experiment”, a wartime conspiracy theory involving paranormal activity.

Written by Kate Trefry from a story developed with Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer and playwright Jack Thorne, the stage adaptation is directed by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin. It premiered in London’s West End in 2023 before transferring to Broadway, where it won Tony Awards for scenic design, lighting and sound, along with a special award recognising its technical effects.

The filmed version of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, will make the production accessible to audiences who have been unable to attend performances in London or New York. Netflix has yet to confirm a premiere date.
