Just ahead of its 78th edition, the Cannes Film Festival has unveiled a stricter dress code policy, taking a stance against nudity and extravagant clothing on its red carpet. In a revised charter issued only days before the event begins, organisers stated that for “reasons of decency,” nudity is strictly prohibited—not just on the red carpet but throughout all festival venues. Additionally, voluminous outfits that obstruct movement are no longer permitted.

While Cannes has long been synonymous with rather bold fashion choices, these changes appear to reflect growing concerns over maintaining decorum and logistical ease. A festival spokesperson clarified that these are not new ideas but formal reinforcements of guidelines that have always been informally upheld, aligning with French public decency laws.

The move arrives in the wake of several headline-making red carpet moments, such as Bianca Censori’s revealing Grammys look. Organisers seem intent on striking a balance between artistic expression and respectful presentation. The ban on overly dramatic gowns, for instance, likely echoes past controversies like musician Tems’ billowing dress at the 2023 Oscars, which blocked the view of fellow attendees.

This is not the first time Cannes has come under the spotlight for its sartorial restrictions. The 2015 “high heels only” rule drew widespread criticism, even from actors like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan commenting on it, prompting a gradual softening of policy. However, the core expectation of elegance and formality remains. From selfie bans to black-tie mandates for evening premieres, the festival continues to project a refined image.
