He's the man behind the dream homes of some of India's best-known celebrities. From actors Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor to Arjun Rampal, Katrina Kaif, Aditya Roy Kapur and Jacqueline Fernandez — architect and designer Ashiesh Shah is the go-to designer for them all.

In his many years of working with a distinguished clientele, Shah recalls that the most outlandish, yet memorable requests he’s received came from Roshan. “We went on a long search for the perfect blue carpet, but no matter how many shades, threads or hues we experimented with, nothing seemed to click,” says Shah. “Then, Hrithik returned from shooting Mohenjo Daro, bringing back a blue pigment called ‘neel’ from Persia, which had been a part of the film’s narrative. And that was it!” This inspired the creation of a custom rug that now graces the actor’s home.

Experiences undeniably shape design preferences and so, one might wonder if a celebrity’s home aesthetic could reveal a previously hidden aspect of their personality. “A lot of stars have a distinct design language that reflects who they are,” Shah admits. “In fact, we’re currently working with a prominent South Indian star whose signature colours are black and gold. These tones run through his personal spaces and the areas where he meets fans and guests. It reflects his style — bold yet elegant, which creates a sense of identity in his home.”

While the aesthetic one selects for their home invariably discloses their personal taste, it also offers insight into one's self-perception. In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Shah delves into the many facets of designing homes for stars, shedding light on the close connection between space and identity.

As the go-to architect and designer for celebrity homes, what’s the first thing you look into?

The first step is to check in with the client and understand their preferences for privacy, that is, how discreet they want the project to be. In most cases, they prefer it to remain highly private and not discussed publicly. Sometimes, we have to sign Non-disclosure Agreements (NDA), which play a significant role in our design process, especially when working with high-profile celebrities or corporate clients.

In the homes of such high-profile celebrities, are the spaces reserved for entertaining vastly different from the private spaces? And if so, why?

There’s a clear distinction between the spaces for entertaining guests and their private zones. It’s about layering the house with different levels of access. There’s the truly private area, which includes bedrooms and family spaces; a ‘private-public’ area, where close friends and extended family are welcomed; and lastly, a more public space for high-profile guests or people they wouldn’t reveal their personal lives to. This tiered approach helps them balance their public personas and private lives, creating privacy zones within the home itself.

In your opinion, does money equal taste?

It’s often inversely proportional! However, with the influence of social media and travel, people have started to develop a better understanding of taste. I've been fortunate to reach a point in my career where clients trust my judgement, so we rarely face major aesthetic clashes. When a client suggests something unconventional (I wouldn’t call it garish — just out of the box), and I don’t agree, we have an open discussion and weigh the pros and cons. I explain my perspective, showing how certain choices might not align with their overall aesthetic in the long run. If they’re still keen on it, we always find a way to make it work without compromising the integrity of the design.

Many of your clients have taxing lifestyles. How do you ensure their living spaces serve as sanctuaries of relaxation while still being functional?

One of the best compliments I’ve received from a client was that their home made them feel like they were on holiday! It’s about how the spaces are laid out, how they flow, and how natural light interacts with the interiors. Lighting design plays a huge role, with dimming and automation that allow for different moods. For actors, specifically, a salon or make-up room is almost always included. Lighting in these areas is key for precision. We also create spaces like massage rooms or physiotherapy areas, especially for clients who perform stunts or do physical work that takes a toll on their bodies. A meditation or puja room is another common request. It’s all about crafting a sanctuary where they can slow down, unwind and feel at home.

While designing Aditya Roy Kapur’s bachelor pad or Ranbir Kapoor’s penthouse, how did you incorporate their tastes into the overarching aesthetic of the house?

The design was meticulously tailored to reflect each individual's unique personal style, while ensuring a cohesive aesthetic throughout the space. We aimed to blend modern sophistication with a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. We selected materials and finishes that resonated with their contemporary tastes, integrating sleek lines and a warm colour palette. Custom art pieces and furnishings were also chosen to add personal touches.

Since art is inherently personal, do your clients collaborate with you while choosing pieces for their homes?

Yes, absolutely. Clients often look to me for guidance in choosing pieces that resonate with them. I have a deep knowledge of art, being both a student and a collector myself, so they trust my opinion. In fact, I’ve travelled with many of them to places like the India Art Fair, Milan, London and more, to find statement pieces that fit their homes. It’s a collaborative process, ensuring the art they select truly reflects their personality and complements the space we’ve designed together.

How do you ensure that your high-profile projects are both luxurious and sustainable?

Through a thoughtful approach to material selection and design. We prioritise high-quality materials that offer a sense of luxury and have a lower environmental impact. This includes using sustainable sources for wood, opting for energy-efficient fixtures, and incorporating materials that are durable and have a long lifespan.

Bollywood stars are known to host the most extravagant parties. Has that been a priority for any of your clients while designing their spaces?

Interestingly, most of the Bollywood clients I work with are quite private! They build their homes primarily for personal use and for entertaining close friends and family. Their focus tends to be on creating a comfortable and intimate space, rather than one designed specifically for grand gatherings.

Semi-precious stones have been all the rage lately — from onyx inlays to lapis lazuli tables. Do they have any special significance?

Luxury is a highly personal concept. Not everyone gravitates towards semi-precious stones, but for those who do, they can serve as a striking centrepiece that embodies luxury. We often incorporate them as signature pieces in a room, allowing them to make a statement, and adding an element of exclusivity to the space.

Tell us about your favourite celebrity home project. What makes it stand out from the rest?

One of my favourite projects has been working with Allu Arjun. It's still in progress, but what makes it stand out is his strong sense of aesthetics. He has a deep knowledge of design, art and culture, and is very clear about what he does and doesn't like. That kind of awareness makes the process exciting and collaborative. It’s inspiring to work with someone who has such a refined taste and vision for their space.

What upcoming projects are you most excited about?

I’m particularly excited about Allu Arjun’s home; it’s shaping up to be something truly special.
