Kamal Haasan and director Shankar have officially confirmed the third part of their Indian film series.

Indian 3: War Mode was announced by Lyca Productions, with a poster, captioned: 'Senapathy is back with zero tolerance.'

Alongside Kamal Haasan, the returning cast members include SJ Suryah, Siddharth, Priya Bhavani Shankar and Bobby Simha, with Kajal Aggarwal also set to join the ensemble. Anirudh Ravichander will return as composer for the project.

The future of Indian 3 was uncertain for a long time, with director Shankar reportedly giving Lyca Productions a limited window to decide whether the long-awaited sequel will move forward.

According to reports, Shankar had informed the production house that he intended to begin work on Velpari instead, his long-gestating adaptation of Venkata Krishnappa Nayaka’s Tamil epic novel. The filmmaker was said to have given Lyca Productions two to three months to decide whether it wants to complete and release Indian 3.

The comes after Indian 2 failed to succeed at the box-office. Released in 2024, the sequel reunited Kamal Haasan with Shankar, with Haasan reprising his role as Senapathy, the vigilante introduced in the 1996 original.

The production of Indian 2 had been marked by several delays. During a prolonged halt in filming, Shankar moved on to Game Changer, starring Ram Charan. When Lyca Productions subsequently asked him to resume Indian 2, the director reportedly worked on both projects simultaneously. Some portions of Indian 2 were also reportedly handled by members of Shankar’s assistant director team, as well as filmmakers including Arivazhagan.

Indian 2 expanded the story of Senapathy, a former freedom fighter and martial arts expert who returns to fight corruption. The film ended with a post-credit sequence further expanding Senapathy’s family history and setting up the stage for a period saga, while also introducing Kajal Aggarwal in a significant role. The sequence introduced viewers to the plot of Indian 3, which is now expected to continue the story.

Kamal Haasan was last seen in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, which flopped at the box-office. He also has the untitled reunion project with Rajinikanth, directed by Nelson in the works. Meanwhile, Shankar previously directed Ram Charan-led Game Changer, which performed poorly as well.
