All is well — again. Superstar Aamir Khan has confirmed that a sequel to his blockbuster 2009 comedy-drama 3 Idiots is in the works. The film is expected to reunite its original cast, including R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, and will be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who also helmed the original.

Khan, who played the eccentric inventor Phunsukh Wangdu in the film about the friendship of three engineering students, said he has heard the story by Hirani and his long-time collaborator Abhijat Joshi and “loved it”.

“Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story and it’s wonderful,” Khan said in an interview with Amar Ujala while promoting his upcoming production, Ek Din.

“The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” he added.

While Khan is attached to star in a new film set to be announced in a month, the actor said he will also eventually headline 3 Idiots 2.

“It’s a beautiful story conceived by Raju and Abhijat. I’m looking forward to it, and to playing Phunsukh Wangdu again,” he added.

Khan and Hirani were supposed to reunite— after 3 Idiots and their 2014 satirical comedy PK—for a biopic on cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke, which the actor confirmed has now been put on hold due to scripting issues.

While the sequel of 3 Idiots is set to happen eventually, there are reports that Khan has already zeroed in what is going to be his next: A biopic of BharatPe co-founder, entrepreneur Ashneer Grover.

Even though there is no confirmation on the project, it is reported that the film, also starring Shraddha Kapoor, will be directed and produced by Rahul Mody.

Scheduled to release theatrically on May 1, Ek Din is a remake of the 2016 Thai film One Day and is headlined by Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi.
