Ajith Kumar’s latest release, Good Bad Ugly, has been taken down from Netflix following a court order over a copyright dispute involving music maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Justice N. Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court ruled that the producers were barred from streaming or exhibiting the film in any format with Ilaiyaraaja’s compositions, which had been used without proper authorisation. The order prompted Netflix to remove the film from its catalogue, just months after it debuted on the platform following its theatrical release in April.

Directed by Adhik Ravichandran, Good Bad Ugly featured three of ilaiyaraaja’s iconic songs — Ottha Ruba Tharen, En Jodi Manja Kuruvi and Ilamai Idho Idho. The composer objected to their inclusion in the soundtrack, demanding ₹5 crore in damages and a formal apology from the producers before taking legal action.

In his petition, Ilaiyaraaja argued that the use of his work without clearance or royalty payments infringed his copyright and undermined the value of his creative contributions. The court’s verdict has reignited debate over intellectual property rights in Indian cinema, particularly the use of classic songs in contemporary films without securing the necessary licences.

Ilaiyaraaja, whose career spans more than five decades has long maintained that composers must be granted “special moral rights” over their work, regardless of music label ownership. His notice also requests a “detailed account of revenue earned from the commercial exploitation of the said works.” This is not the first time the composer has taken legal action over the use of his music. In recent years, he has issued legal notices to several filmmakers, including the makers of Manjummel Boys and Coolie, over similar disputes.

Good Bad Ugly, which stars Ajith Kumar alongside Trisha, Arjun Das, Prasanna, Prabhu and Sunil, had its theatrical release on 10 April and began streaming on Netflix on 8 May. Its removal is likely to affect its post-theatrical reach, although industry observers suggest the producers may look to resolve the dispute and re-release the film with a revised soundtrack.
