The Maestro will be playing his symphony at the event attended by MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.
In a grand event that will see the participation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, legendary music composer Illaiyaraaja will be felicitated at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Saturday, September 13.
A press note said Ilaiyaraaja would also be performing his symphony at the event. TN CM Stalin had announced that the Tamil Nadu government would felicitate Ilaiyaraaja to commemorate a musical journey that spanned 50 years. His first movie album, Annakili, a musical milestone, released in 1976.
The news arrived a day after the Madras High Court issued a directive restraining the use of Ilaiyaraaja songs in Ajith Kumar’s hit film Good Bad Ugly. The Maestro had objected to the use of three of his tracks in the 2025 film, which Adhik Ravichandran directed. The tracks are 'Otha Ruba Tharen' (Naattu Purapaatu, 1996), 'Ilamai Idho Idho' (Sakalakala Vallavan, 1982), and 'En Jodi Manja Kuruvi' (Vikram, 1986).
The composer reportedly said that these songs were used without his consent or payment of royalties. A report in Live Law stated that the Madras High Court judge had passed a temporary injunction after Ilaiyaraaja approached the court alleging copyright infringement. The order restrains the film’s makers from “exhibiting, screening, distributing, selling, publishing, or broadcasting Good Bad Ugly with the disputed songs on any platform, including OTT.”
In March, Ilaiyaraaja received a rousing welcome at the Chennai airport on his return from London where he presented his first western classical composition titled Valiant with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This was the world premiere of Valiant, set to be performed across the world in the coming months.
The composer had unveiled the symphony at London’s Event in Apollo Theatre on March 9, becoming the first musician from Asian cinema to achieve this feat in London. The veteran musician was welcomed by State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu with government honours and met by representatives from other political parties and hordes of fans.
