The Indian actor and Gucci global ambassador attended the Cannes closing ceremony in a couture look that merged Indian draping with Italian luxury.
Alia Bhatt returned to the red carpet at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, attending the closing ceremony in a custom Gucci gown that blended traditional Indian elements with the Italian fashion house’s signature style. The look marked Gucci’s first interpretation of a saree silhouette.
The gown featured a lehenga-style drape in silver mesh fabric embroidered with crystals in Gucci’s GG monogram pattern. Paired with a deep-neck blouse and a form-fitting skirt in a soft nude hue, the ensemble was completed with a sheer dupatta draped over one shoulder. Bhatt accessorised with a Chopard diamond necklace and wore her hair in soft waves. Her makeup was subtle, save for a defined winged eyeliner and dewy cheeks.
The appearance closed out Bhatt’s brief but high-profile presence at Cannes. Earlier in the day, she embraced retro glamour in a mustard yellow Gucci ensemble, complete with a floral silk scarf, cropped jacket and vintage sunglasses. Styled by Rhea Kapoor, the daytime look drew inspiration from old Hollywood fashion.
This year marked Bhatt’s long-anticipated debut at Cannes. A previous appearance had reportedly been planned for the festival’s opening ceremony but was postponed amid diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan. In a May 13 social media post, Bhatt alluded to the situation, writing, “There’s a certain stillness in the air when a nation holds its breath… our soldiers are awake, alert, and in danger.” While no official reason was given, industry speculation has also pointed to last-minute changes in the festival’s red carpet guidelines—such as restrictions on gown trains and skin exposure—as a possible cause for the delay.
Bhatt, a global ambassador for Gucci, has been a regular at international fashion events in recent years.
She is currently filming Alpha, part of Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, and will also star in Love and War, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.
