The actor-director combo is uniting for the first time for this film. It will be produced by Kalaippuli S Thanu
Tamil actor TR Silambarasan and ace director Vetri Maaran released a first-look poster of their upcoming collaboration, revealing the title of this new film. It will be called Arasan, which translates to ‘king.’ It is being produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu, who had previously collaborated with Vetri Maaran and Dhanush on Asuran. Arasan will be Silambarasan’s first film with Vetri Maaan. The project’s tentative title was ‘STR 49’ and the team released a new poster, hinting at the film’s mood and themes.
With this poster, we also get a confirmation that Arasan too will belong to the world of Vetri Maaran’s gangster saga Vada Chennai, with it likely to be set in parts of North Chennai during the 1990s. Silambarasan’s retro look, with a mullet, also suggests the same. In a recent video announcement, Vetri Maaran announced that he was working on a film set in the Vada Chennai world with Silambarasan. "It was Thanu sir, who suggested we meet Simbu. I met him immediately, and within a few hours, everything fell into place. Vada Chennai 2 will star Dhanush," he said. The hit 2018 film, which was set in the North Chennai neighbourhood, explored a gangster rivalry.
The filmmaker also added that he was urged to put up this video owing to speculations regarding his feud with Dhanush over the matter. Dhanush, being the producer of Vada Chennai, is the owner of the film's intellectual property, the filmmaker said, adding that it's morally right for a person to ask for money for their copyrighted content. "The day after I met Simbu, I spoke to Dhanush about this and told him we could go two ways with this film, which is either set the film in the world of Vada Chennai or do it as a standalone film and that it depends on him. He told me to do whatever is comfortable for me. He told me he would give NOC and said no money was needed."
Vetri Maaran last produced Bad Girl, a coming-of-age drama directed by Varsha Bharath and led by actress Anjali Sivaraman.
