The trailer for Mari Selvaraj’s 'Bison' teases an intense kabaddi drama rooted in caste politics and rebellion, led by Dhruv Vikram in what could be his most defining role yet.
The trailer for Bison Kaalaamadan, directed by Mari Selvaraj and starring Dhruv Vikram, dropped on Monday, signalling the arrival of one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year. Co-produced by Pa Ranjith, Applause Entertainment and Neelam Studios the film features Anupama Parameswaran, Rajisha Vijayan, Lal, Kalaiyarasan, Ameer, and Azhagam Perumal in pivotal roles. Set against the earthy backdrop of rural Tamil Nadu, Bison traces the journey of a young kabaddi player from a marginalised community who refuses to be crushed by the social structures that confine him.
The two-minute trailer offers a raw, visceral look at Dhruv’s transformation into a fiery athlete, torn between personal ambition and the collective fight of his people. His character, defined by both rage and idealism, takes on powerful local figures — played by Lal and Ameer — who symbolise the oppressive systems that have long dictated his world. True to Mari Selvaraj’s cinematic voice, the trailer brims with striking imagery, political urgency, and emotional grit, promising a story where the kabaddi ground becomes a metaphor for resistance and identity.
At a recent promotional event, Dhruv spoke at length about his admiration for Mari Selvaraj, describing the director as his “guru”. “No matter how much I thank Mari sir, it won’t be enough,” Dhruv said. “People said I wasted two or three years waiting for this film, but for him, I’d wait ten. Hearing him say ‘take ok’ on set made me feel like I’d achieved something in life.”
With Bison, Dhruv takes on his third lead role after Adithya Varma and Mahaan, stepping firmly into the politically conscious space that Selvaraj and Ranjith have helped shape in Tamil cinema. The film is slated for release on October 17, arriving as a major Diwali title alongside Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude and Harish Kalyan’s Diesel.
