There are Rajinikanth jokes. And then there are jokes made by Rajinikanth. The Superstar's humorous side was on full display at a grand event for Coolie, held on August 2 at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

Rajinikanth’s fun speech at the trailer and audio launch was peppered with self-referential digs and hilarious anecdotes, which left the crowd guffawing. In a hysterical bit, he ribbed director Lokesh Kanagaraj by recalling the time he went to meet the Coolie and Vikram director. Lokesh’s third film, Kaithi, had became a huge success, and Rajinikanth wanted to secure his shot of working with the filmmaker.

“I wanted to meet him before other actors begin to line up. He said ‘yes’ and added that he was a Kamal Haasan fan. ‘Did I ask you? Did I ask you whose fan you are?” was quoted as saying. He added that this was Lokesh’s way of indicating he has an “intelligent story” without “any punch dialogues”, which is Rajinikanth’s trademark.

Rajinikanth also made fun of the overlong promotional interviews that Lokesh, as well as Aamir Khan and Nagarjuna, have been giving ahead of their respective movies. Both Aamir Khan and Nagarjuna were present at the event and have much-hyped turns in Coolie, which releases in cinemas on August 14.

"Director Lokesh gave a two-hour-10-minute interview for a channel. I watched that interview; it was going on and on. I sat, stood, paced around, and it was still going. I woke up after a nap and, guess what? It was still going on," Rajini joked. Nevertheless, he called Lokesh the 'real hero' of Coolie.

In his inimitable style, Rajinikanth also poked fun at himself in a reference to song choreography of Coolie, which has been handled by ace dance choreographer Sandy Master. "He promised me that we'd kill it in the first song. I told him, "I am a 1950s model and have run lakhs of kilometers. My parts were used and changed. So, don't pressure me and handle me with care."

Also clearing the air about his rumoured feud with Sathyaraj, who plays Rajinikanth's friend in Coolie, the Superstar said, "Sathyaraj and I may have ideological differences. However, he is a man who speaks his heart out. We can believe such people who speak out everything that they think." The actors are collaborating nearly four decades years after the 1986 film Mr Bharath.

Coolie also features Soubin Shahir, Upendra and Shruti Haasan. The film will clash at the box-office with the marquee Hindi release War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.
