In a world where the audience is increasingly finding morally grey characters to be relatable, it is important to find more such characters. Dhanush, last seen in Anand L. Rai’s Tere Ishk Mein, has often been observed to play such characters whether in his 2011 film Mayakkam Enna or the 2022 Selvaraghavan directorial, Naane Varuvean. In his upcoming action-thriller, as revealed by director Vignesh Raja — while in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India — Dhanush’s character will have a complex internal aspect with elements such as mistakes, guilt, and redemption driving the narrative.
He further shared that, when he had narrated the script to his actor, one of the questions he encountered was regarding the boundaries he would be pushing with the character. “He did ask me if you want to push it so much — because what if he becomes unredeemable?” said Raja, with reference to his conversations with Dhanush.
Dhanush also told Raja that, had the film come to him a decade ago, he would have just “walked into” the role, but now views the character through a more responsible lens. Once the character was tweaked, there was not much debate regarding the same during the production phase. Looking back on the decision, Raja said, “I am glad that we did. It was the right decision in retrospect.”
While talking about his journey, he mentioned how his filmmaking has evolved since his debut, particularly in terms of control on set. Admitting he was “a bit of a control freak” earlier, the director said he has actively tried to step back and trust his collaborators more on Kara. This shift, he noted, brought a certain unpredictability to the process which helped in shooting a key emotional scene that had to be shot differently due to unexpected rain.
The film, starring Dhanush, Mamitha Baiju, and Suraj Venjaramoodu, is set to release on April 30, 2026.
