Fahadh Faasil looks back at one of his most emotionally complex roles in filmmaker Shyamaprasad's 2013 film 'Artist'.
In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Fahadh Faasil opened up about playing Michael in Artist (2013), a role he calls the darkest and most selfish of his career. The actor looked back at one of his most emotionally complex characters.
Directed by acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker Shyamaprasad, Artist tells the story of two young lovers — Michael, an ambitious painter, and Gayatri, an art student—who dream of a creative life together in Kochi. But when Michael’s career hits a wall after an accident leaves him blind, the relationship begins to unravel. Instead of empathy, Michael spirals into a web of manipulation and self-pity, leaving behind a trail of emotional wreckage.
Now, more than a decade after Artist, Fahadh reflects on the darkness of that character with surprising honesty. “A film called Artist which I’ve done with Shyamaprasad sir... that’s the most selfish character I’ve done," he shared. “But it was written like that. And I was convinced. I was convinced with the writing, I was convinced with how it was narrated to me. And I absolutely loved performing it.”
The role, according to him, remains a benchmark for its layered complexity. “If you look at it, that’s the most selfish character I’ve played in my career. And the most selfish character Shyam sir has written,” Fahadh said. “I think Shyam sir and I were convinced that the character in Artist was a very selfish character. And I think that’s a dark character, he is actually evil to everyone.”
When asked whether a character’s moral compass is important to him, Fahadh admitted, “Yes, I think it's very important. But I failed. I failed with a big film in the last one year. When something is not in your control, I just leave it; take your lesson, leave it. But otherwise, I’ve tried consciously to see the tangents of my characters or why they function in a particular way.”
Fahadh, who has since become one of India’s most versatile performers, known for roles in Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), Joji (2021), and Vikram (2022), will next be seen in Maareesan, a Tamil film directed by Sudheesh Sankar and written by Krishna Moorthy and V. Krishna Moorthy. Also starring Vadivelu and Kovai Sarala, the film is set to release on July 25, 2025.
