Fahadh Faasil talks about Rajinikanth's 'Baashha'

Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil's first impression of watching a Tamil film was Rajinikanth's action classic Baashha (1995). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Fahadh reminisced about bunking school in Ooty to watch the blockbuster.

While Fahadh's father, veteran director Fazil, had made popular and memorable Tamil films like Varusham Padhinaaru (1990), Kadhalukku Mariyadhai (1997) and others, it was through Baashha that Fahadh first experienced the raw and resonant power of Tamil potboilers.

"I was in school in Ooty, in grade 9th or 10th," Fahadh shared. "We bunked school one evening and saw Baashha. It was the first Tamil film I saw in a full house."

Released in 1995, Baassha was a hit gangster drama featuring Rajinikanth as a humble auto driver with a dark past. The Superstar's performance in the film, especially his transformation from meek everyman to violent criminal, marked a canonical moment in the star's trajectory.

"It's the first time I saw a superstar being so honest on screen," Fahadh said. "The construction of scenes where in such a manner. There is the popular sequence where he goes in for his sister's admission and that whole thing happens... and then he goes, "Ayya, en peru manickam. Enakku innoru per irukku." Then he comes out of the cabin saying that she's got the admission, and his sister asks him what he said, to which he replies, "Unmaya sonen." I was really blown away by it. There was a sense of communication to the audience. That point was a big high."
