According to reports, the actor-politician will be taking the oath as a Rajya Sabha MP on July 25. Ahead of the event, Haasan met fellow actor and superstar Rajinikanth, with whom he has starred in several films during their early career, including iconic classics like Apoorva Raagangal (1975) and Moondru Mudichu (1976).

On the film front, Rajinikanth will next be seen in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie; the director worked with Kamal Haasan in the blockbuster Vikram in 2022.

"Out of Rajinikanth sir's filmography, I love Thalapathi the most, and I have tried to maintain that balance with this film. That is what I tried to achieve with this writing," Lokesh told THR India in an exclusive interview.

Life for the filmmaker came full circle when Rajinikanth acknowledged his vision. "After watching the film in the dubbing studio, he [Rajinikanth] hugged me and said, 'It looked like Thalapathi for me!' That made my day, and that was the night I slept very peacefully after many months. That is what I was telling my friends, too. If at all, I am doing a film with Rajini sir, it has to be somewhere close to Thalapathi. I cannot write a film on par with Mani sir’s quality, as his film and writing is unmatched.. but I got a little satisfaction when we compare that film with this one. Listening to the same words from Rajini sir was an achievement."

Coolie marks the filmmaker's first collaboration with the Tamil screen icon. Speaking about writing for the actor, he says, "I loved writing for Rajini sir. I initially wrote a fantasy film for him, and he immediately said okay to it, but assembling it took so much time... it would’ve taken at least a year and a half to go ahead."

“I can’t guarantee that Coolie will make ₹1000 crores, but what I can guarantee is the value of the ₹150 or ₹200 ticket cost that people will pay to watch the film. That’s on me. I’m not a manager or organiser to predict that a film will make so much money even before it’s released; no creative person can do that," Lokesh concluded.
