The Oscar-winning banner behind 'The Elephant Whisperers' collaborates for the first time with acclaimed Tamil director Karthik Subbaraj, whose 10th feature begins filming in Madurai.
Sikhya Entertainment, the Oscar-winning Indian production house behind The Elephant Whisperers, has announced its first collaboration with acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj. The yet-untitled feature began filming on Sunday in Madurai after a traditional pooja ceremony.
The project marks a significant crossover between two of Indian cinema’s most distinctive voices — Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain’s Sikhya Entertainment, known for championing rooted, globally resonant storytelling, and Subbaraj, one of Tamil cinema’s most inventive contemporary directors.
Over the past decade, Sikhya has become a powerhouse of independent Indian filmmaking, producing titles such as The Lunchbox, Masaan, Pagglait and the National Award-winning Kathal. The banner’s global recognition peaked with The Elephant Whisperers, which became India’s first Oscar-winning documentary short in 2023.
Subbaraj, meanwhile, has built a reputation for blending sharp social observation with mass appeal. From the cult thriller Pizza (2012) to Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023), his filmography spans genres and moods while retaining a distinctly personal stamp. The upcoming film marks his tenth feature.
Speaking about the collaboration, Monga Kapoor said, “At Sikhya, we’ve always believed in nurturing original voices and telling homegrown bold stories that travel across cultures. Partnering with Karthik feels like a natural extension of that mission. His cinema is rooted, inventive and wildly original, yet universal in emotion. He bridges mass appeal and auteur vision with such ease, and I’m excited to be on this journey with him.”
Subbaraj echoed the sentiment, calling Sikhya’s involvement “a perfect match” for his creative ambitions. “I’ve always admired the kind of cinema Sikhya stands for,” he said. “Collaborating with Guneet and Achin, who have built a legacy of meaningful and award-winning films, is truly special. This story is very close to my heart, and I’m glad to have found the right producers for it.”
Achin Jain, co-producer at Sikhya, added that the partnership reflects the company’s evolving vision. “Karthik brings a rare balance of craft and instinct — he’s cult and commercial at the same time. His films are unpredictable yet deeply emotional. We’re excited to collaborate with a filmmaker who understands both the pulse of the audience and the heart of storytelling.”
No details have been revealed yet about the cast or release timeline, but the collaboration signals an ambitious new chapter for both Sikhya and Subbaraj.
