After missing its initial release date, the makers of JSK - Janaki Vs State Of Kerala have agreed to change the film’s title to add the initials of the lead character. The new title of the film is said to be JSK - Janaki V. Vs State Of Kerala, according to a suggestion by the CBFC. Instead of the 96 cuts that were initially demanded, the CBFC has now settled for two cuts in the film. The name Janaki will either be muted or removed in two other instances, ending the film’s long-standing legal battle.

CBFC raised concerns over the film’s title as it portrayed the name Janaki, another name for Sita, as a survivor of sexual abuse. The CBFC has also asked for a new Censor certificate to be issued within three days.

The original release date of Union Minister Suresh Gopi’s upcoming courtroom drama was slated for Friday, the 27th of June. But the film has faced obstacles after CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) demanded a change in the film’s title along with a change in the name of the titular character.

In a similar case, another film named Token Number faced obstacles with the lead name of its protagonist. In that case, the makers had to change the name of the lead from Janaki to Jayanti.

Earlier this week, producer Suresh Kumar had come forward to blame Mohanlal’s L2:Empuraan for all the censorship scrutiny faced by JSK - Janaki V. Vs State Of Kerala. According to the report, Suresh Kumar had told the press that the string of controversies that followed the release of L2: Empuraan made the Censor Board extremely vigilant and careful. Empuraan underwent 24 “voluntary cuts” totalling 2.08 minutes after it faced backlash, primarily from right-wing groups, following its release on March 27, 2025. “The censor board became more cautious after that (Empuraan issue). That’s why this problem has arisen (for JSK); everything began from there," he was quoted as saying.
