Speaking to the media at Goa airport, Kamal spoke about his plans for reviving 'Marudhanayagam', sparking excitement among fans.
Tamil legend Kamal Haasan has once again rekindled hopes for his unfulfilled magnum opus, Marudhanayagam. Originally launched in 1997, with the late Queen Elizabeth II famously in attendance, Marudhanayagam was envisioned as a grand historical epic chronicling the life of Muhammad Yusuf Khan, an 18th-century warrior-turned-reformer in colonial India. After portions of the film were shot, financial hurdles stalled the production. Since then, the film has attained a mythic status in Kamal’s oeuvre.
Speaking to the media ahead of the International Film Festival of Goa, Kamal spoke about his plans for reviving Marudhanayagam. Kamal’s 2024 production, Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, is the opening feature of the India Panorama section of the festival. The film is also nominated for the prestigious Golden Peacock award, IFFI’s top prize.
Speaking to the media at Goa airport, Kamal asserted that modern technology could finally make the decades-old dream of finishing Marudhanayagam possible. “I am confident that Marudhanayagam is possible with the advancement of technology in today's era," Kamal was quoted as saying, sparking excitement among fans.
During an Instagram live in 2020, Kamal had hinted at a rewrite to revive the project. The other option, he suggested, was to cast a younger actor in the central role.
"The happenings in the script need to be reworked, as it was originally written for a 40-year-old protagonist. Either I have to change the time frame and reimagine the proceedings, or I have to find another suitable actor to play the role," Kamal had said.
Presently, Kamal is producing Thalaivar 173 under his Raaj Kamal Films International banner. The project reunites him with superstar Rajinikanth after several years. Director Sundar C recently announced his departure from the project. Since then, it's been speculated that actor-filmmaker Dhanush may direct the film. The makers, however, are yet to announce a new director.
