IFFI 2025 to Honour Rajinikanth and Balakrishna for Five Decades in Cinema

IFFI 2025 in Goa will honour Rajinikanth and Nandamuri Balakrishna for completing 50 years in cinema. Union Minister Dr. L. Murugan announced that the actors will be felicitated at the festival’s closing ceremony recognising their iconic contributions to Indian film culture.

The International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa, will celebrate two towering figures of Indian cinema this year. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan has announced that Rajinikanth and Nandamuri Balakrishna will be felicitated at the festival’s closing ceremony for completing 50 years in the industry.

Speaking to reporters alongside Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Murugan shared the news, acknowledging the actors' long-standing impact on Indian film culture. A PTI report quoted him saying, “Legendary actors Rajinikanth and Nandamuri Balakrishna will be felicitated for completing 50 years in cinema, marking a milestone that celebrates their enduring influence on Indian film culture.”

He added that the honour recognises “their iconic body of work, widespread popularity, and contribution to shaping Indian storytelling across decades.”

Rajinikanth, who recently appeared in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ensemble film Coolie (2025), is currently filming Jailer 2 with director Nelson Dilipkumar. Balakrishna who was last seen in Daaku Maharaaj (2025)

alongside Urvashi Rautela, is working on Akhanda 2: Thaandavam and has another project with filmmaker Gopichand Malineni lined up.

IFFI 2025 will run from November 20 to 28, concluding with the ceremony at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium. The festival opens with a grand float parade along D.B. Bandodkar Road and will host screenings of major international films, including titles showcased at Cannes, Berlinale, Locarno and Venice.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier described this edition as one that “embraces inclusivity and diversity, showcasing voices from all corners of the world while spotlighting Indian regional cinema’s rich tapestry.” He noted that new programmes focusing on emerging filmmakers and digital storytelling will help foster talent and reflect the evolving landscape of filmmaking.
