When makers of Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie put out a sleek video, about 100 days before the release date of the film in May, fans pointed out the similarity between the Tamil superstar's shot amidst the sunset and his iconic shot from Mani Ratnam's 1991 classic Thalapathi. Now, in an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kanagaraj revealed that his intention with Coolie was to find the same impeccable balance that the Mani Ratnam film achieved more than three decades ago.

"Out of Rajini sir's filmography, I love Thalapathi the most, and I have tried to maintain that balance with this film. That is what I tried to achieve with this writing," Lokesh told THR India.

Life for the filmmaker came full circle when Rajinikanth acknowledged his vision. "After watching the film in the dubbing studio, he [Rajinikanth] hugged me and said, 'It looked like Thalapathi for me!' That made my day, and that was the night I slept very peacefully after many months. That is what I was telling my friends, too. If at all, I am doing a film with Rajini sir, it has to be somewhere close to Thalapathi. I cannot write a film on par with Mani Sir’s quality, as his film and writing is unmatched.. but I got a little satisfaction when we compare that film with this one. Listening to the same words from Rajini sir was an achievement."

Coolie marks the filmmaker's first collaboration with the Tamil screen icon. Speaking about writing for the actor, he says, "I loved writing for Rajini sir. I initially wrote a fantasy film for him, and he immediately said okay to it, but assembling it took so much time... it would’ve taken at least a year and a half to go ahead."

So, the director instead fixed on Coolie. "You can write anything for the actor because he is larger than life. Even though I have tried a lot of new techniques and styles in the film, it will still be a Rajini sir film. I also don’t want to change that."

The film had around 700 to 1000 people and technicians working on set every day, he reveals. "It is a film of that size, as the film is about the union, the harbour and labourers. Everybody has respect for Rajini sir. We were always on set before time. It has been four months since the shoot, but we miss him. Whenever I get the time, I go and meet him on the set of Jailer 2 (Nelson's sequel with the actor)."
