Vijay Deverakonda had two exciting stories when filmmaker Gowtam Tinnanuri approached him to collaborate on a film, but the actor knew he had to let go of one because a similar feature was being mounted by someone he knew. Which is why he chose Kingdom, the duo's first collaboration set to release on July 31.

"Gowtam had two stories that he wanted to tell. Both of which I loved, but we decided to go with this one (Kingdom) first," Deverakonda said in an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India.

The actor said the other story was "very similar" to a film that was being made, and as he happened to know the makers of the other film, he didn't deem it correct to go ahead with it.

"We would have finished it first, but it's not respectful or ethical, and I really want that film to do well. Since there was some overlap happening, I thought let's pick this one. Also, because this was an action drama, a genre I really like. It was very interesting, and I always tend to push, I like to go big and go all out and that is something that I rub off on my teams and directors; Gowtam is a great storyteller and this is where he goes big in his way," the actor added.

For Deverakonda, working with Tinnanuri was more than just a creative collaboration; it was a connection. Talking about the director, Deverakonda said, “I feel like mine and Gowtam’s paths were meant to cross. This was a film where I picked the director even before I had a script. I knew I wanted to work with him because he has a great sense for telling stories and he has a great sense of telling emotions in a beautiful way.”

Recalling their earliest interaction, he said, “Gowtam came to me with his first film, Malli Raava (2017). He had sent me a script that was so intimidating! It was a 300-pager of Malli Raava. I'm aware he's been fond of me for a very long time, and I have built a fondness for him through making this film”.

The actor lauded Tinnanuri for having a "great eye for how he wants to see the film" and praised his shot-taking abilities. "I love how he lenses his actors, and the drama. He is the kind of director who can explain a scene on an emotional level. He speaks very little. His set is super quiet, and I don't know how he achieves it, but it works at a crazy pace.” he added.

Kingdom is produced by Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya and also stars Satyadev and Bhagyashri Borse.
