“The principle is the same,” Kapoor explains. “You’re looking at male protagonists who are broken, volatile, emotionally exposed. These love stories don’t necessarily end well, or they pass through trauma before finding any resolution. Young male audiences, especially, connect deeply with that.”

If one looks at the kind of music that has worked over the years, Kapoor notes, they are very "Vishesh Films-Emraan Hashmi" coded. “In those songs, heartbreak was always central, even when the films weren’t strictly romances, the music carried that angst.”

In 2025, film soundtracks became a genius new-age marketing tool. Songs from 

lived on reels for weeks before release, embedding themselves into youth culture long before the opening day, he adds.

“Music has become a part of the narrative ecosystem. When a film targets youth, and the music clicks, you see it translate directly into strong first-day numbers.” That explains why these films opened aggressively, even as more family-oriented titles took time to grow. According to Kapoor, the geography of Hindi cinema has also shifted post-pandemic.

“Dependence on Mumbai and Delhi multiplexes has reduced. Smaller towns, single-screen markets like UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are contributing significantly now — and this kind of content works very well there,” Kapoor notes.

The irony, perhaps, is that while rom-coms once dominated the urban imagination, it’s heartbreak that now feels more universal. As Kapoor puts it, none of these films have yet reached 

levels in terms of music or storytelling. “But if something really solid comes along, there’s no reason a film in this space can’t do ₹500–600 crore.”

According to recent reports, Tamil star Nayanthara has been confirmed to star in veteran director Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s next film with Malayalam superstar Mammootty. This could be seen as Nayanthara’s return to the non-commercial cinema space after several years. In Malayalam, Nayanthara had once backed films like Shyamaprasad’s 

 in 2010, which dealt with the complex theme of the Electra Complex. No official statement from the production company has been released regarding Nayanthara’s signing. She will next be seen in the Chiranjeevi-starrer 

, directed by Anil Ravipudi in a Sankranthi release. 

In December last year, following weeks of speculation, it was Adoor who confirmed that his next film would be with the star. He was speaking on the sidelines of a literary event organised in Kerala, and he confirmed this to On Manorama. He went on to add that he kept thinking of Mammootty as he worked on this script and said he couldn’t picture anyone else in that role. He also said that Mammootty had not only agreed to act in the movie but that he would also produce their collaboration under his production company, Mammootty Kampany. 

 (The Servile) all the way back in 1993. Vidheyan had won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam and the Best Actor Award for Mammootty. Adoor’s last feature film release was Dileep-Kavya Madhavan’s Pinneyum (Once Again) in 2016. 

As for Adoor, he was most recently in the news for having made several controversial remarks during the closing ceremony of Kerala’s film conclave in Thiruvananthapuram in August. He is reported to have spoken about the State Government’s initiative to promote SC/ST and women filmmakers and called for better training before being allotted funds.

Universal Music India (UMI), a division of Universal Music Group (UMG), has entered into a definitive agreement with 

 and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment, taking a significant minority stake in the film and digital content studio.

Under the agreement, which values Excel at ₹2,400 crores, UMI will become a significant minority shareholder in Excel with a 30% equity stake. The deal will provide the foundation for Excel to accelerate its growth and further enhance UMI’s position in the Indian market.

Under the terms of the agreement, UMG will gain global distribution rights for all future original soundtracks created for projects owned or controlled by Excel. The alliance also includes the launch of a dedicated Excel music label, to be globally distributed by UMG. 

Universal Music Publishing Group will also become Excel’s exclusive music publishing partner, creating opportunities for existing UMG and UMI artists and repertoire to be included in Excel’s future productions.

 is used to being watched. As an actor, that is the job. As a star whose brand is built on physical precision and control, it is also the expectation. But Shroff says the sharpest eyes on him are not in the audience. They are at home.

Speaking about feedback, the actor revealed that his mother, Ayesha Dutt, and his sister, Krishna Shroff, are “brutally honest” critics. Their honesty, he said, can sting—but it also keeps him grounded in what matters. “When they say the script has failed you, it hurts, but it’s a compliment as well,” he said, explaining that they are not blaming his effort as much as calling out a larger problem.

But the feedback that has changed him most is not about a bad film. It is about a bad habit.

Shroff admitted he still has to learn “to internalise things” and “not be as superficial.” He offered an example that is almost uncomfortably specific, revealing how vanity can quietly creep into performance.

“If I’m shooting a song—a romantic song—I need to be invested in my co-actor as opposed to being invested in myself,” he said. “A lot of times I’d be angling my face in a certain way while looking at her, just so I get the light hitting my jawline properly or taking the light into my eyes a little better, as opposed to giving her that energy.”

It is the kind of confession most actors avoid, because it pulls back the curtain on the calculation behind a “perfect” frame. But Shroff described it as a creative failure, not a cosmetic one. If the attention is on one’s own face, it is not fully on the other actor. If it is on angles and lighting, it is not fully on emotion.

That is why his family’s feedback lands. They notice the shift instantly. Asked if they can point out exactly where vanity creeps in, Shroff agreed. “Because they know me. They know me so well,” he said. When it was put to him directly that he is thinking about himself in that moment, he did not deny it. “About myself, yeah.”

His sister’s version of the note is even blunter. “My sister says you need to be a little less selfish at times,” he said, accepting the criticism with a shrug. “Which is fair.”

Shroff also acknowledged the irony. Acting is one of the few professions where appearance is part of the performance. “It’s our job, in a way, to focus on the aesthetic part of it as well and to look a certain way,” he said. “It does have its pros and cons.”

The growth, he suggests, lies in knowing where that awareness ends. There is a difference between being camera-ready and being present—and his mother and sister, he says, keep reminding him to choose the latter.
