The film also marks Khanna's Telugu film debut.
Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna will make his Telugu film debut in Prasanth Varma's upcoming creation. He will be playing Asuraguru Shukracharya in the film Mahakali. Varma made this announcement on X, along with a poster of the character. "In the shadows of gods, rose the brightest flame of rebellion, Presenting The Enigmatic #AkshayeKhanna as the eternal 'Asuraguru SHUKRACHARYA' from #Mahakali," Varma wrote.
Khanna, in menacing form, is seen with flowing silver hair and a top bun, his eyes glinting in the dark. The film, directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru, is created under the PVCU or Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe. The film is being produced by RKD Studios, with Varma serving as creator and co-writer. Mahakali will have music by Smaran Sai and cinematography by Suresh Ragutu. Its additional casting details are yet to be revealed.
Comparisons to Amitabh Bachchan's Ashwatthama from Nag Ashwin's Telugu epic Kalki 2898AD were swift, with fans drawing parallels between their looks. PVCU will be overseeing several instalments in the future, one of which is Adhira. It was recently announced that the film will feature Kalyan Dasari as a superhero and SJ Suryah as the antagonist.
Meanwhile, Varma, known for the popular Telugu film HanuMan (2024), will return with another mythological film, centred around the Hindu god. The film is Jai Hanuman, starring Rishab Shetty. Varma has expressed that it has been a dream project for him. “The film is not just about the undying spirit of devotion and courage that Lord Hanuman embodies, but also a reminder that strength guided by faith can move mountains," he has said about the film.
Akshaye Khanna was last seen in Laxman Utekar's Chhaava (2025) as Aurangzeb. The actor will next be seen in Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar, which is said to be a period action thriller rooted in real events.
