Two rising Malayalam film directors were arrested early Sunday after authorities found a small quantity of suspected "hybrid ganja" in their possession during a raid on a Kochi apartment, officials said.

Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamsa were taken into custody along with a third individual, Shalif Muhammad, after Excise officials allegedly intercepted them preparing to use the substance. The apartment, reportedly belonging to director and cinematographer Sameer Thahir, was the target of a pre-dawn raid based on specific intelligence.

Officials said the seized substance — 1.50 grams of what is believed to be hybrid ganja — had been sourced within Kerala. Investigators are continuing efforts to trace the supplier, whose mobile phone has reportedly been switched off since the arrests.

The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), a major body representing film technicians, announced the suspension of Rahman and Hamsa hours after their arrest. Both were released on bail, as the quantity of cannabis was classified as a non-commercial amount under Indian law.

The arrests come as Kerala’s Excise Department intensifies a sweeping anti-drug campaign within the Malayalam film industry. Deputy Commissioner T.M. Maju said the operation followed secret intelligence gathered after the launch of the drive on April 21.

Rahman, known for directing Thallumala, and the recently-released Alappuzha Gymkhana, and Hamsa, director of Thamaasha and Bheemante Vazhi, are among the notable new-generation filmmakers in Malayalam cinema.

Authorities said the apartment had previously been under surveillance, and the duo had narrowly evaded an earlier raid in March. Sameer Thahir is expected to be summoned for questioning, officials added.

Separately, actors Shine Tom Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi appeared before Excise officials in Alappuzha on Monday in connection with a separate drug seizure. The broader crackdown has reignited debate about drug use within Kerala’s thriving film community.

The investigation remains ongoing.
