The Netflix executive says she’s approached with story ideas everywhere she goes, and embraces it as part of the passion people have for the platform.
When you are the Global Chief Content Officer at Netflix, story pitches can come at you from just about anywhere. For Bela Bajaria, that includes the most unexpected places. In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, she shared that she once found herself being pitched an idea in the middle of a medical test.
“The tricky part is, if anyone knows I work at Netflix, I get pitched everywhere,” Bajaria laughed. “The barista has a story, the doctor has a story… I was in my doctor’s office one day, walking on a treadmill during a cardiology test, and he goes, ‘I have an idea.’ And I was thinking... this is definitely not the time to pitch me a show.”
But the executive doesn’t see these moments as an inconvenience. “People just love it. They have ideas, and they know a lot about Netflix,” she said. “It’s very interesting because I have worked at different companies and people just don’t have that same kind of ownership and connection to it, which is an amazing thing.”
Whether in an airport, at a café, or in a doctor’s office, Bajaria says she takes pitches in her stride. “I would still take that and the personal connection to Netflix versus the alternative. It’s just a passion for what it is,” she noted. “That’s the thing about film and TV. People are connected to something, they watch something, and that makes them think of an idea. It’s the oldest form of storytelling—around campfires, through family stories, oral traditions. It’s such a personal thing that people love,” she added.
Bajaria, who joined Netflix in 2016 and became Chief Content Officer in 2023, has since overseen some of the platform’s biggest global hits—from Bridgerton and Wednesday to Squid Game and Lupin. In India too, she’s championed shows like Delhi Crime and Sacred Games, reinforcing her focus on bringing the best stories from around the world to Netflix.
