Earlier this year, Aamir Khan raised eyebrows when he called the eight-week window between theatrical and streaming releases “a really faulty business model.” The actor argued that a pay-per-view system was essential, saying films should not land on platforms like Netflix so soon without an extra layer of monetisation. Khan's last film, Sitaare Zameen Par, was released on YouTube in a pay-per-view format following its theatrical run.

But Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer, Netflix Global, isn’t budging. In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, the head honcho pushed back against the idea. “What members love about Netflix is that you pay a subscription fee and you get to watch Netflix,” she said. “It’s not pay here, there, where is it? Which window is it? On Netflix, it’s very clear.”

On whether Netflix would ever consider a pay-per-view model, Bajaria stood firm, stating, “For us, it’s just been the ease of—it’s on Netflix and you get to watch it. And so I would say that to me it is more about consumer choice and control.”

To illustrate the point, Bajaria drew on Netflix’s recent foray into live sports. “Last weekend we did a boxing match, Canelo Álvarez vs. Terence Crawford. It's a huge sport, but it's also been very fragmented and pay-per-view for a long time. And you know what we said to our members is that they don’t have to pay extra or differently. Members didn’t have to figure out how to pay more. It was basically, 'If you are a Netflix member, you guys have this boxing match'".

Bajaria also underscored Netflix’s commitment to India’s film ecosystem through its pay-one model. “We have pay-one movies and all of these amazing movies that are in the theatres in India and then come on Netflix. That’s great for our consumers. And it’s great for those producers and all the talent that’s involved in those studios. It helps actually invest more into the film community.”

Ultimately, she stressed her vision remains unchanged. “When I look at it, and always have around the world, I want the best movies on Netflix—period. And that is going to be a mix of original movies and pay-one movies.”
