Hollywood’s most ritualised night of self-congratulation is under way once again. The 98th Academy Awards begin in Los Angeles with comedian Conan O’Brien hosting the ceremony for the second time.

This year’s race arrives with some dominant frontrunners. Sinners leads the nominations with a record-breaking 16, including best picture, best director and best original screenplay. Close behind is One Battle After Another with 13 nominations, while Frankenstein, Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value follow with 9 each. All five are competing for best picture, alongside Bugonia, F1, Hamnet, The Secret Agent and Train Dreams.
