Rajinikanth admitted he is generally reluctant to make sequels, believing filmmakers often replicate what worked in the original and amplify it for the follow-up. At the recent promotional event for Jailer 2, he spoke about what made Jailer 2 different.
He revealed that Sathya Movies had approached him for Baasha 2, while Karthik Subbaraj had pitched Petta 2, with a story that would have further explored Vijay Sethupathi’s character. However, he was not keen on pursuing either project.
Explaining what prompted him to reconsider his stance on sequels for Jailer 2, the actor recalled revisiting the first film after its OTT release. He pointed to the scene towards the end in which Varma, just before Rajinikanth’s character is about to kill him, warns him that his extensive network would retaliate. The film also establishes the existence of three containers carrying valuables worth ₹1,000 crore. Rajinikanth said these plot points convinced him there was enough material to build a sequel around. "Nelson took a lot of time to work on the sequel, and it made me realise that this might work very well," he said.
Jailer 2 has been in production for over a year and its release coincides with the Dussehra holidays, a strategic move intended to give the sequel a grand opening across both domestic and international markets.
Jailer, Rajinikanth's first collaboration with Nelson, was released in August 2023. It follows the life of a retired jailer, Muthuvel Pandian, who tries to find his missing son and ends up crossing paths with an eccentric idol smuggler, Varman. Both Jailer, and its sequel, are produced by Kalanithi Maran, and are composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
The action-comedy became a blockbuster and the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023. The sequel appears to be a continuation of Pandian’s storyline. Jailer 2 releases in theatres on October 15. The film co-stars Ramya Krishnan, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, and Suraj Venjaramoodu in important roles.
