Days before Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi starrer ‘Ramayana: Part One’ opens in cinemas, JioHotstar and Prime Focus Studios have announced a partnership that will put the film on the streaming platform in India as a pay-per-view title once the exclusive theatrical window ends.
Backed by Namit Malhotra, the film is set to release worldwide on November 5 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English across all the premium formats.
JioStar Chairperson Nita M. Ambani said, as India enters a new era of storytelling, the platform aims to use technology to bring the best stories to everyone.
"Ramayana is one of India’s greatest civilisational treasures - a story that has shaped our conscience, inspired our imagination, and guided the way we live for centuries. As India enters a new era of storytelling, we have an extraordinary opportunity to carry our cultural legacy forward".
Malhotra, producer of the film and founder and CEO of DNEG, said Ramayana is best seen on the biggest screen possible, but that the country’s cinema infrastructure cannot reach everyone. JioHotstar, he said, was a natural partner to take the film into homes after the theatrical run.
"I believe Ramayana should be experienced on the biggest screen possible, in IMAX 3D. But our country’s cinema infrastructure cannot reach everyone who holds this epic close. Ramayana belongs to every Indian, and our ambition must reflect that. JioHotstar has time and again shown how technology can bring a nation together through its sports and entertainment offering. That made them a natural partner to take Ramayana into people’s hands and living rooms, after its theatrical run," he added.
The first of two parts, the film is produced by Prime Focus Studios with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.
The film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and adapted by Shridhar Raghavan from Valmiki’s epic. Hans Zimmer and A. R. Rahman share composing duties. Ravi Bansal and Ramsey Avery handle production design, while Terry Notary and Guy Norris oversee action.
In Ramayana, Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, with Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, Kunal Kapoor and Kajal Aggarwal are also in the cast.
