Filmmaker Aditya Dhar has formally addressed the growing speculation around his upcoming spy thriller Dhurandhar, putting to rest all assumptions linking the film to the life of Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mohit Sharma.

The conversation, which had been steadily intensifying on social media, reached a peak earlier this week after the late officer’s brother, Madhur Sharma, publicly sought clarity from the filmmaker.

The speculation began soon after the trailer dropped and Ranveer Singh’s intense, covert-ops-inspired look circulated online. Fans and commentators noted visual similarities to Major Sharma, who famously went undercover as Iftikhar Bhatt during a high-risk infiltration mission in the early 2000s. As the chatter grew, many assumed Singh’s character was directly inspired by the decorated 1st Para (Special Forces) officer.

On Tuesday, Madhur Sharma reacted to a post on X implying the same and asked Dhar to address the reports, writing that the family deserved a clear, factual answer. “The parents are waiting for that one confirmation whether this is about their son,” he wrote, tagging the filmmaker. Responding publicly, Dhar issued what he termed an “official clarification.”

He tweeted, Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification.” He went on to add that any future attempt to tell Major Sharma’s story would be approached with full transparency, consultation, and consent from the family. “If we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it in a way that truly honors his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us,” he added.

Apart from Singh, the film features a powerful ensemble cast consisting of Arjun Rampal as ISI Major Iqbal ('The Angel of Death'), R Madhavan as intelligence strategist Ajay Sanyal ('The Chariot of Karma'), Akshaye Khanna as Rehman Dakait ('The Apex Predator'), and Sanjay Dutt as Chaudhary Aslam ('The Jinn'). The film is set to release on December 5.
