'Kuberaa,' co-starring Nagarjuna and Rashmika Mandanna, will be released on June 20.
Telugu filmmaker Sekhar Kammula's upcoming drama Kuberaa, revolves around two men with varying backgrounds: Deepak (Nagarjuna), a high-level officer and Deva (Dhanush), a beggar looking out for survival. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the filmmaker spoke about the genesis of the idea and his experience working with a star cast of such nature.
"This is the first time I'm working with so many stars," Kammula said. "Dhanush is a multi-faceted individual. And he's also a one-take actor... When I first met him, I told him he needed to be leaner and frailer for the role. He told me I'd probably be the only guy who wanted him to become leaner. He worked out his food and looked frail in the part. The characters stay in his head, and he lives the part."
Jim Sarbh, who plays an important role in the film, was a surprise package. "He only knew English. But he had to do his lines in both Telugu and Tamil. And for his first scene with Nag, he said all his lines with confidence. He sits with the assistant directors to get all the nuances," Kammula said. In the same interview, Nagarjuna recalled how he could barely recognise Dhanush on set the first day. "Dhanush got into the character straightaway. The first day I came to shoot, it took me 2 minutes to find where he was because he blended into the role."
The Telugu actor also added that his own role, Kumar, was the one that resembled Kammula the most. "Deepak's character is very close to him because this is what he would be like if he were an officer. His (Kammula's films) characters are very humble and straightforward. What you see is what you get. That's what Kumar is about. There's a sense of decency to him. There's a constant guilt in him as to whether he should do more," the veteran Telugu actor said.
Kammula admitted that he often shares the same energy. "I am very restless, and with every film I keep thinking I could do better. It keeps going on. I am afraid of praise, too." The filmmaker further spoke about his staunch belief in socially responsible films. "This is a film about ideologies and the current state of our nation. It is a beautiful conflict between someone who grabs everything for survival and a guy who lives for comfort and convenience. This was a very challenging arc, and I'm glad that the story occurred to me," he said. It is important to be inclusive and tolerant to be a filmmaker today, according to Kammula.
"I am very socially conscious, and I read the paper. I still live in the same place I lived 25 years ago. I have my team who criticise me and keep the conversation going. I get affected by what happens daily in the nation and politics. Being sensitive and reactive to what's happening around you is important. You have to open yourself up," the filmmaker added.
