The Sekhar Kammula film also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Jim Sarbh.
A race for money, power and dignity ensues, as shown by the trailer of Sekhar Kammula's Kuberaa. The almost two-minute-long video depicts tightly cut glimpses of Deva (Dhanush), a beggar who gets a new lease on life, and Kumar (Nagarjuna), a seemingly wealthy government official. When Kumar offers Deva some money and strength, their lives get upturned, and a battle for money and power begins.
The Sekhar Kammula film also co-stars Rashmika Mandanna, who seems to be Deva's sole companion and friend in the film. "This world is not just theirs. It is also mine. They will not have any money or police. I'll see to it," Deva says in the trailer, as the cat-and-mouse game begins.
The film, which also features Sunainaa and Jim Sarbh in key roles, has music by Devi Sri Prasad, camerawork by Niketh Bommi, and production design by the legendary Thota Tharani. The Telugu film is headed for a June 20 release.
Tamil actor-director Dhanush is stepping into the Telugu film industry for the second time with Kuberaa. In a recent press meet in Mumbai, the actor recalled what drew him to the script. "It is because of Sekhar sir that I did this film," he said. "He is a fantastic human being. You will not meet a person like him. You do a lot of films and meet a lot of people. But when you meet someone like him, you feel the travel is worth it. He narrated the movie to me in 20 minutes, and I loved his energy and positivity. The Tamil actor also noted that the film took him back to his childhood in a way.
"I come from very humble, rooted beginnings," he said. "Today, I'm here by god's grace. (But) I've seen that (life), and to go back there was very enlightening and nostalgic. I'm very thankful to this film for so many reasons, and taking me back to my childhood was one of them," he said, adding that he just had to follow Kammula for the film. "Sekhar sir was brilliant. He taught me the nuances, the slang and made life very easy for me. I enjoyed the challenge."
