Welcoming Aryan Khan on stage, Shah Rukh Khan looked on from the wings as the young debutant director talked about his series, which tells a story of ambition, heartbreak and rivalry in the film world.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan was all charm as he played master of ceremonies at the preview event of The Ba***ds of Bollywood, the directorial debut of his son Aryan Khan. A wild, edgy satire on the chaotic world of Bollywood, the series will premiere on Netflix on September 18.
Shah Rukh, his right hand in a sling following a recent surgery, said he is still recovering but was happy to introduce his boy’s debut show. The actor, who turns 60 this year, was injured on the sets of his upcoming film, King.
“I got injured in my shoulder and had a slightly long surgery. It will take a month or two for me to recover,” he said, jokingly adding, “But my one hand was enough to pick up the National Award.”
Khan then patiently—and playfully—introduced the cast and crew of the show, which is led by Lakshya Lalwani and also features Bobby Deol, Raghav Juyal, Sahher Bambba, Manoj Pahwa and Mona Singh. Actors Manish Chaudhari, Anya Singh, Vijayant Kohli, Gautami Kapoor and Rajat Bedi round out the cast.
Welcoming Aryan on stage, SRK looked on from the wings as the young debutant talked about his series, which tells a story of ambition, heartbreak and rivalry in the film world, and is studded with glittering cameos, from a foul-mouthed Karan Johar to an unimpressed Salman Khan (“Bulls*it party,” the Tiger 3 star swears in the preview).
Gauri Khan, co-producer of The Ba***ds of Bollywood, also joined her husband and son onstage for a sweet and emotional moment.
“I am filled with gratitude for the love I have received in this land for the last 30 years,” SRK intoned. “Today is a special day because my son is taking his first steps in the same country. I feel great, as all fathers do. He (Aryan) is very hardworking. At home, we have taught him that box-office success or critical acclaim is never guaranteed. But what can be guaranteed full-time is one’s hard work.” He urged the audience to give Aryan “150 per cent of the love you have given me.”
Bobby Deol, who is in practically everything these days, praised the dedication and sincerity Aryan displayed on set, revealing that the young filmmaker made him do rounds of multiple takes. “His ’one mores’ wouldn’t end,” Deol quipped.
Billed as a provocative, tongue-in-cheek take on the Hindi film industry, The Ba***ds of Bollywood is written by Aryan along with Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan. Siddiqi and Chauhan are also credited as co-creators of the Red Chillies Entertainment production.
Speaking about the series, Aryan Khan said, “With The Ba***ds of Bollywood, I wanted to build a world that feels alive, a mix of glitz and grit, where ambition shines, egos clash, and nothing is ever as it seems."
The official synopsis of the show reads, “An ambitious outsider and his friends navigate the larger-than-life yet uncertain world of Bollywood. The series blends self-aware humour with a high-stakes narrative — and promises a host of unforgettable cameos, blockbuster thrills and an adventurous ride into the world of Indian cinema.”
