Backed by Karan Johar, 'Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari' is helmed by Shashank Khaitan.
Karan Johar-backed Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari opened in cinemas on a National Holiday and had a face-off with Rishab Shetty's highly anticipated Kantara: Chapter 1. The result was what the trade expected: A decent opening day figure for the film headlined by Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor.
After a month of intense promotions, joined by other cast members Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari managed to open around the ₹9.25 crore mark, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The official figures of the film were ₹10.11 crore.
The numbers are strictly decent for the film, which should have opened higher due to the Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti holiday factor. The collections will now expectedly to dip on Friday, with Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari aiming to record a jump on Saturday and Sunday.
The film is helmed by Shashank Khaitan, who is reuniting with Dhawan after Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, both blockbusters.
The film has opened better than the last few films in a similar space, including Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Param Sundari and even Dharma's Jugjugg Jeeyo, starring Dhawan and Kiara Advani, which had registered a day one of ₹9.28 crore on a non-holiday.
This was the third theatrical outing for Kapoor, who was also seen in Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound, which opened in cinemas a week before Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. She will be next seen in Peddi, headlined by Ram Charan. The film is gearing up for a grand release next March.
Dhawan, meanwhile, will be next seen in Border 2. A sequel to the 1997 film, Border 2 also stars Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty and Sonam Bajwa among others. After this, Dhawan will be seen in filmmaker father David Dhawan's comedy, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, scheduled to release in 2026.
