Tentatively titled 'Thalaivar 173,' the film will be produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI) banner and will be released by Red Giant Movies during Pongal 2027
Tamil superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan will collaborate on a new project directed by filmmaker Sundar C.
Tentatively titled Thalaivar 173, the film will be produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI) banner and will be released by Red Giant Movies during Pongal 2027. The other cast and crew behind the film is set to be revealed later.
The news was announced in a press release that stated, “This landmark collaboration not only unites two towering forces of Indian cinema but also celebrates five decades of friendship and brotherhood between Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan: a bond that continues to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike."
"Commemorating 44 years of Raajkamal Films International, #Thalaivar173 unites Superstar Rajinikanth’s magnetic screen presence with Sundar C’s direction, in a landmark production envisioned by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran," it added.
It is unconfirmed whether Haasan will also star in the film alongside Rajinikanth or just serve as producer. The actor-producer had stated at an event earlier this year, "We’ve been itching to work together for a long time. Like how a biscuit was being split into two, we had then demanded that we each be given a whole biscuit each. Now we’ve found the joy again to realise that we are both happy with just that half biscuit again. So we’ll come together.”
In all likelihood, Thalaivar 173 will be a solo Rajinikanth film, and the two stars could reunite on-screen for another project to be announced later.
Sundar C has earlier directed Rajinikanth in Arunachalam (1997) and Kamal Haasan in Anbe Sivam (2003). This year, his long-delayed Madha Gaja Raja, starring Vishal and Santhanam, was a huge success. He followed it up with Gangers in which he acted alongside Vadivelu, and is now shooting Mookuthi Amman 2, starring Nayanthara.
Tamil actor Vishal also will be reuniting with Sundar C for his upcoming film. The duo has been behind hit Tamil films such as Madha Gaja Raja and Aambala. The film, tentatively titled 'Vishal 36', is billed to be a "power-packed mass entertainer."
