In an age where modern love stories are often eclipsed by thrillers and dystopias, The Royals arrives like a breath of fresh air. The new Indian rom-com from Netflix, starring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, reinvents the fairy tale with a twist of realism, rooted in tradition but racing toward ambition.

Set in the fictional town of Morpur, The Royals follows the unlikely alliance between a financially struggling royal family and a self-made CEO. The show’s charm lies not only in its story but also in its star-studded ensemble — from Zeenat Aman to Sakshi Tanwar and Nora Fatehi.

Khatter plays a modern price, Aviraaj Singh, while Pednekar portrays Sophia Kanmani Shekhar, a skilled CEO. Together, they work to restore the regal haveli in Morpur and transform it into a boutique hotel.

Written by Neha Veena Sharma, directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, and produced by Pritish Nandy Communications, the series is created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy.

“More than 50 per cent of my collaborations have been [with] women, revealed Khatter, during the Q&A part of the evening. "I have been moulded by them and that made my job easier.” Speaking about the show and its binge-worthy packaging, he added, “They [the production team] gave me eight scripts and I told them I’ll get back to them in seven days. They asked me to take ten, but I ended up reading all in one-and-a-half. That’s how 'bingeable' the show is.”

Pednekar recalled the time she read the script for the first time as well. “I had dengue [fever] when I read the script… only because it was a romance and I love love.” She also said, “Working on this show was the most wholesome experience ever.”

The lack of romcoms in Hindi cinema in 2025 is why they made this show, revealed Tanya Bami, Netflix India Series Head, while writer Neha Veena Sharma admitted to the biggest challenge being the very intersection of romance and comedy.

Producer Rangita added, “I got very greedy when it came to the actors and it didn’t help that I had Netflix backing my greed." Deeming The Royals to be a shared dream, they're now ready to share it with the world on May 9.
