TIFF 2025: Bobby Deol Represents Dharmendra At 'Sholay' Restored 4K Premiere

Bobby Deol's own film, 'Bandar' (Monkey In a Cage), directed by Anurag Kashyap, also had its world premiere at TIFF.

Bobby Deol exuded charisma as he represented his father, veteran icon Dharmendra, at the premiere of the new Sholay restoration at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). A cult classic of Indian cinema, Sholay directed by Ramesh Sippy and starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Amjad Khan and others recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The film has been restored in 4K by Film Heritage Foundation (FHF) in collaboration with Sippy Films.

Bobby Deol walked the TIFF red carpet for Sholay with Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Ramesh Sippy and Kiran Juneja. The film was screened at the 1,800-seater Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.

Running at 204 minutes, the 4K restored version of Sholay includes the original ending as well as two deleted scenes and with the original 70mm aspect ratio of 2.2:1. The intricate restoration work took place at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Rome, Italy.

Deol's own film, Bandar (Monkey In a Cage), directed by Anurag Kashyap, also had its world premiere at TIFF. Written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, the prison drama also stars Saba Azad, Sanya Malhotra and Sapna Pabbi. According to the festival's website, Bandar takes an 'unflinching look at the thornier ripple effects of #MeToo in digital-age India.' Deol plays an ageing television actor named Sabar, who is accused of rape by his ex-girlfriend and taken into judicial custody.

“I never imagined a film of mine will go to a festival,” Deol said at the premiere of Bandar. “I enjoyed every moment of working on this film. It had been my desire for many years to collaborate with the great Anurag Kashyap. Finally he thought of something, and my producer, Nikhil Dwivedi, made it happen.”

Deol recently appeared in Hari Hara Veera Mallu opposite Pawan Kumar. The actor will next be seen in Aryan Khan’s directorial debut series, The Ba***ds of Bollywood.
