Val Kilmer, the acclaimed actor whose career ranged from playing Jim Morrison in The Doors to suiting up as Batman in Batman Forever, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed the news, stating the cause was pneumonia.

A Juilliard-trained performer, Kilmer emerged in Hollywood in the 1980s, making his big-screen debut in the 1984 comedy Top Secret! before landing a star-making role as Iceman in Top Gun (1986). His portrayal of Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) further solidified his reputation as a dedicated actor willing to fully embody his characters.

In 1995, he took on the mantle of the caped crusader in Batman Forever, stepping into one of Hollywood’s most high-profile roles. Though the film was a commercial success, Kilmer would not return for a sequel. His career, however, continued to evolve, with notable performances in Tombstone (1993), Heat (1995), and The Saint (1997). He was known for his intensity and commitment to roles, earning both admiration and, at times, a reputation for being difficult to work with.

Kilmer’s career took an unconventional path in the 2000s, with turns in independent films such as The Salton Sea (2002) and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005). He also pursued theater, writing and performing a one-man show about Mark Twain. In 2021, the documentary Val provided an intimate look at his life, drawing from decades of personal footage.

Kilmer is survived by his children, Mercedes and Jack.
