Vijay’s 'Jana Nayagan' Pre-Release Booking Headed Towards All-Time Records

Superstar and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, has already taken a bumper opening in pre-release sales. According to multiple reports, Jana Nayagan is said to have earned ₹6.7 crore in the domestic market by Sunday evening. A report from Sacnilk said the film sold tickets worth ₹3.86 crore through 1,33,904 tickets across 2,399 shows. It also said that the Telugu and Hindi versions of the film are yet to gain momentum. All eyes are on the film to see if its opening day will eclipse the all-time day one opening record of Rajinikanth’s Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed Coolie, which raked in a record of ₹151 crore on day one. The challenge, despite Vijay's popularity, could be the film's high-profile leak earlier this year.

In April of this year, Jana Nayagan was leaked online months before its theatrical release. Clips from the big-budget political thriller started appearing on social media, including the film's title credits, action scenes, introduction sequence, and climax.

Jana Nayagan also became embroiled in a legal dispute after the CBFC delayed issuing a certificate, with the film missing its Pongal release date. The producers claimed that the examining committee had indicated the film would receive a U/A certificate subject to certain modifications. However, the certificate was not issued, and the film was instead referred to a revising committee, prompting the producers to approach the court.

The CBFC informed the High Court that the decision to send the film for revision was taken following a complaint from a single member of the examining committee. The complaint alleged that some objections had been ignored and that certain scenes in the film could potentially hurt religious sentiments and misrepresent the armed forces.

The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Narain, and Nassar in key roles, with music by Anirudh Ravichander. After announcing a release on July 24, it was later advanced by a day.
