The theatrical rollout for Jana Nayagan, Tamil star Vijay’s final film, is shaping into one of the biggest events in Indian cinema. The H. Vinoth-directed political action drama is slated for a mammoth release across more than 30 countries on July 23, with distributors targeting over 8,000 screens worldwide — a scale that places it alongside recent tentpole films such as Jawan and Pushpa 2: The Rule.

Advance bookings for the film have already opened across several overseas territories, while Tamil Nadu bookings are scheduled to commence on Sunday. The unprecedented demand is expected to occasion one of the biggest opening weekends for a Tamil film, with exhibitors adding early morning and special fan shows where regulations permit.

The formidable buzz for Jana Nayagan also begun reshaping the Tamil release calendar. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s much-awaited acting outing DC, which was earlier expected to arrive around the same window, has now been pushed to avoid a direct clash with Vijay’s swansong. According to reports, other Tamil releases are also reassessing their launch plans, with trade circles anticipating a near-monopoly of premium screens for Jana Nayagan during its opening week.

Following the new release date announcement of Jana Nayagan, GV Prakash’s Immortal, which was originally slated for July 23, was postponed to September 4. Keerthy Suresh’s Sathyavan Savithiri, scheduled for July 24, is also expected to shift its release date. The ripple effect extends into the following week as well, with Sigma, directed by Jason Sanjay, and DC, helmed by Arun Matheswaran, previously lined up for release, following suit.

Meanwhile, R Madhavan's G.D.N, a biopic of Indian inventor and engineer GD Naidu, was also quietly pushed from its July 17 release. While no official reason was stated, the decision has sparked online speculation that the film is steering clear of the Vijay-starrer.

Also starring Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde and Prakash Raj, Jana Nayagan marks Vijay’s farewell to acting as he transitions to full-time politics following his election as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Originally, the film was scheduled to release earlier this year on January 9, timed to meet the Pongal festivities. However, the certification process of the film ran into delays and controversies, including when a member of the CBFC’s examining committee raising concerns about certain scenes potentially hurting public sentiments.

Jana Nayagan received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification on July 9, months after it was first submitted to the statutory body. The film’s ‘A’ certification and details have been uploaded to the CBFC's official website.
