Ali Fazal has a way of choosing projects that surprise audiences in good ways, but sometimes in ways that also leave his fans and critics confused. His appearance in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, now streaming and trending on Netflix, falls in the latter category.

In the much-hyped gangster saga starring Kamal Haasan, Fazal plays Deepak Yadav, a rival to Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan) and Amar's (STR) gangster organisation — a part that sounds substantial on paper, but in execution, is barely there. The brief turn is easy to miss, hard to make sense of, and even harder to defend when you consider where Fazal is in his career.

“I got a lot of flak for it. I haven’t watched it,” Fazal says flatly, when asked about the film. “A lot of people are asking me why I did it. I honestly just did it because of my love for Mani sir’s world.”

Fazal is self-aware enough to know that this wasn’t a strategically smart move. “This opportunity came by, and it was a very tiny role. I said, okay, great, as I would love to share notes with Mani sir. I don’t know what finally happened though. It didn’t work at the box-office, as I understand. A lot of people have been messaging me, friends and fans, asking me why I would do something like this. To them I’m saying.. that it’s okay."

Still, he doesn’t seem particularly disillusioned. “I had a very pleasant experience. I’m talking about my experience being welcomed to the Tamil industry by these people — by Mani sir and his team, by Kamal Haasan sir. They were really kind and sweet.”

The online criticism and head-scratching analyses haven’t rattled him either. “I now know about the scenes that are there and the scenes that are not there. And honestly, I would not question Mani sir’s big vision,” he says. “They worked out the whole story. I know it went through a lot of changes in the making. Honestly, that’s it to that — chapter closed.”

There’s no bitterness or regrets, and Fazal has only hope. “I hope I get to work more extensively with Mani sir again. I hope I get to work with cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran again — he is brilliant in the way he shoots. I would like to explore more work with such amazing talent. Hopefully in the future, why not?”
