Siddharth P Malhotra is set to make a film on the lives of legendary actor Meena Kumari and her filmmaker husband Kamal Amrohi.

Filmmaker Siddharth P Malhotra's ambitious feature Kamal Aur Meena is all set to move to the next stage of filmmaking: onboarding its cast. The makers of the star-crossed love story, based on the lives of legendary actor Meena Kumari and her filmmaker husband Kamal Amrohi, are hoping to lock their cast in a month as narration for the film officially kicks off.

"We have finished writing the film, the dialogue draft is complete. The narrations begin this week," Malhotra, known for helming movies like Hichki (2018) and Junaid Khan-starrer Maharaj (2024), told The Hollywood Reporter India. The film is written by Bhavani Iyer and Kausar Munir.

"We have shortlisted three actors for the roles of Meena ji, Kamal saab and his first wife, Mehmoodi ji, who has an extremely important role in the film. The film also has dialogues in Urdu, so the heroine who comes on board will have to learn to speak and write in Urdu; Meena ji was a poet, so there will be a number of workshops as well," the filmmaker added.

Calling it one of his most ambitious projects, Malhotra revealed that the team has carefully contextualised the script by drawing inspiration from the authentic, handwritten love letters exchanged between Meena and Kamal.

"We have 500 handwritten love letters and diaries, and over 2000 pages of texts which we first translated into Hindi or English—as they were written in Urdu. So, whatever is in the film is the absolute actual reality because we have got their writings to contextualise it," he said.

The filmmaker said the team will be recreating the period from 1950 to 1970 for the film, which will also have unreleased songs from Pakeezah, which was directed by Kamal, and featured Meena delivering one of her best performances. The actor passed away just a month after the film's release in 1972, at the age of 38.

"Meena ji was 18 and Kamal saab was 32 when they first met on the sets of Tamasha (1952). The film spans 20 years of their lifetime, so we are recreating that world. A. R Rahman is doing the music and since Saregama is producing it, we have got the unreleased music of Pakeezah (1972) as well. Meena ji was married to Kamal saab till she died, and the two are buried next to each other, while his first wife is just a few graves away. The team is really excited; it is going to be a big, cinematic film," he added.

Produced by Bilal Amrohi (grandson of Kamal), Saregama and Rohandeep Singh, and with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, the shooting timeline will be clear once the cast is locked.

"We are approaching big actors, so it depends on their schedules and availability," Malhotra concluded.
